Watch out for some serious imaging-nerd-stuff. Frédo Durand and Julie Dorsey have published a paper for a fast bilateral filter with better accuracy and formal analysis on their project page. Their technique reduces the contrast while preserving the details and they offer a PDF as well as sample code for download.
